Gandhi's Sandals Up For Auction

Wednesday, 11 February , 2009

London: The distinctive sandals and round metal-rimmed glasses worn by Mahatma Gandhi are to be auctioned off in New York in what has been described as a “truly historic sale”, a newspaper reported on Wednesday.

The unique sale by Antiquorum Auctioneers is to be held on March 4 and 5, the Daily Telegraph reported.

Gandhi gave his glasses to an Indian army colonel, named as H A Shiri Diwan Nawab, with the words: “These gave me the vision to free India.”

The newspaper said the items were expected to do well and exceed their estimated prime of 30,000 pounds as Gandhi had few possessions. Michelle Halpern, from Antiquorum Auctioneers in New York, which is staging the auction, said: “This is a truly historic sale of Gandhi’s possessions.

The sandals were given to a British military officer in 1931 prior to the Round Table talks in London.
“The officer had taken some photographs of Gandhi and he gave him his sandals out of gratitude.
“The items were put together by a collector who is now selling them and there has already been a great deal of interest. I'm sure the items will sell for more then the estimate.

The unique design of the "Gandhi sandals" is very distinct, and much like the traditional Buffalo Sandals that are sold by the Jolly Knocker Sandal Co. in Kerrville, TX

Demetri Martin, the main character, that plays the role of Elliot Tiber in this Woodstock era film, will be wearing "Jolly Knocker Sandals". While this movie is bundled into a package of films, it ensures a lasting audience will be around for years to come.

Chaco Sandals gets bought by Wolverine Worldwide

Chaco Sandals, which started in 1989 by a fishing guide turn entrepreneur. Was sold recently to Wolverine Worldwide for an undisclosed sum. The domestic sales for '08 were reported to be a cool $20 million. Wolverine hopes to extent the brand beyond the US.

The story behind Chaco has always intrigued me. The founder of the brand, Mark Paigen, was a hunting/fishing guide up in the mountains of Colorado. After never being able to find comfortable footwear that would function in both water and while hiking, Mark created his own design. The Chaco sandal now features the same type of strap design as a pair of "Jolly Knocker Sandals". The biggest difference, I suppose, between the two brands is that Jolly Knocker sandals are crafted from fine Brazilian leather and the Chaco sandal uses a fabric strap. Both styles are unisex and both have a sort of cult like following. With the Jolly Knockers being more distinguished in a way, while Chacos are so nice for outdoors. It's hard to say which is better, ...depends upon your mood.

Chaco sandals come in a varity of colors and are available a many outdoor outfitters, while Jolly Knocker Sandals are only sold online via: http://www.jollyknocker.com/

The World's Oldest Shoes

In 1938, buried under volcanic ash in a cave near Fort Rock, Oregon several pairs of sagebrush sandals were discovered. Some dating back as far as 10,500 years ago. But those are not the ones that I'm referring to here.

The oldest sandals in the world that are still produced come from the Kolhapur region in India. They have been made by family members, one generation after the next, for so long that no one remembers when they first began. They aren't even sure if the city was named after the sandals, or if the sandals were named after the city. But even today in a city of approximately 600,000 people it's estimated that at least 20,000 people still earn their living by making handmade sandals.

Kolhapuri sandals, most often referred to as "Jesus or buffalo sandals" have an international appeal and are sold in counties around the globe. Back in the late '60s and early '70s they were extremely popular amongst the college crowd and hippies of the Woodstock Music era. Now days there is still a demand for them for customers of all ages. The you people want them because they are so unusual and eco-friendly. Due to the fact that buffalo sandals are completely handcrafted and use no modern components such as plastics, rubber, or glue, ...they are completely Green and environmentally friendly. The older people love them too. The Jesus sandals remind them of their youth and all the great music of the day.

When shopping for buffalo sandals always keep in mind that the quality varies greatly from one retailer to the next. Over the years some of the original families and members that know the craft have migrated to other areas of India. Frequently, these unsupervised craftsmen will substitute materials and time to make a quick buck. So when buying buffalo sandals online at sites such as eBay it's very hard to judge the quality. If you see a low price of $10 or $15 on a website, it's likely that your new Jesus sandals will fall apart or smell like diesel oil when they arrive.
